Bordwell-Narrative (Hailey Sartoris)

As an individual who believes everything has a reason or purpose I agree strongly with the article as it states, a narrative helps people make sense of the world. It makes me think back to Ancient Greece when people could not explain the feeling of love so they conjured up the idea of Eros, with his magic bow and Aphrodite with her beauty. It makes me think of when people could not understand why storms ragged, why droughts shriveled crops, and why people were able to self-heal wounds. The Ancient Greeks took characters and fitted the actions of natural phenomenons with something their minds could comprehend such as Zeus throwing lighting bolts out of anger, Poseidon being stingy with his precious water, or Prometheus stealing the ability to heal and giving it to humans. People want to believe in a higher power and in order to make that myth a reality they make up and tell countless stories that become so wide spread it's unclear if they are fiction or not. That's all everything really is after all, a series of stories, religion itself is simply a narrative, the Bible providing the plot to Christianity. Heaven and Hell are essentially just scenes in this certain story whether people believe in it or not, strip away the layers and the truth is clear. Humans need explanations, we need stories in order to teach us, to keep us grounded.

I agree that what makes a good story is in fact some sort of formula, but I also think when every story follows a formula none of them really become unique. They can all be different, yes, but not as eye catching. I believe among other reasons that is why over the years since the creation of theater box offices, they have went from playing hundred of movies a year to around thirty. People have seen enough to where films become predictable. No one wants to sit and watch a film they know exactly every scene to. That's where the idea of mixing it up comes into play the directors outlined in this passage take the chronological order of events and throw it out of the window. They make the audience expect one ending and give them something completely different, even if it is not the best ending a story could have it becomes new and innovative. Story telling is about making something come to life in someone's head, that is all writers and directors are is story tellers with their own interpretations. If you gave two different authors a topic and said write, their scripts would be completely different.  It is the same scenario if you were to give two directors the same script, their views and imagination on how the script should come alive on film will be worlds apart.
